Teeny Tiny Doggie Dental!

Keywords: Dental Teeth Tiny dogs
Just wanted to share with you the teeny tiniest doggie I have done a full dental cleaning polishing and dental x-rays on.  His name is Rudy and he is 2.9 pounds and is 9 years old.  Such a cutie! What makes general anesthesia difficult for such small animals as our dogs and cats includes hypothermia.  They need to be kept as warm as possible and also keep there blood pressures normal.  His IV drip rate was set at 20 cc per hour.  That's just slightly more  than a tablespoon;-) He needed a general because there is no way to really clean these little mouths without getting all the teeth inside and out. He's doing great!  He brings so much joy to his family! IMG_1431.JPG

Expanding Your Horizons

Keywords: Youth Education Veterinary Medicine
ast Saturday I had the wonderful opportunity to talk to 60 young women about becoming Veterinarians!  Expanding your Horizons is a organization that plans seminars for 6th 7th and 8th grade girls, to encourage them to do well in math and science for their careers.
I love talking to kids about becoming vets.  This age group especially is wonderful, very focused and really a joy to work with.  We talked about what is needed to get into vet school and then we broke into groups and learned how to  do a physical exam of 3 of our wonderful dog volunteers(Peanut, Torpedo and Sandy).  They were able to use a stethoscope to listen to their own hearts and the dog's too!  We also had some great x-rays for them to read.  That was fun especially when i put up the x-ray of my own back and asked them what species itas.  Many said Girraffe;-)  Click here to learn more about "Expanding Your Horizons".

Fleas, Ticks & Mosquitoes!!!

Keywords:
Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes are bad for your pets!!!  Please! To prevent disease protect your cats and dogs from these nasty critters!  So many people tell me their pets DON'T HAVE FLEAS!  If your cat or dog steps out the door, they have fleas.  Please, use a preventative.  The poor cats who aren't protected from fleas just have to clean themselves all the time. In the process they eat the fleas and then get tape worms.  Yuck!  Of course cats will groom all the fleas off so you won't see them,  But they are dealing with an incredible flea load!  A simple dose of prevention every month will keep them much happier and at the same time protect them from the dreaded HEARTWORM disease. This is transmitted by mosquitoes and both dogs and cats, ( even indoor pets)  are at risk! Talk to your VET! Do it now!

Keep Off the Grass;-)

Keywords:
These beautiful lush grasses are so tempting to our pets!  Be careful not to allow them to eat the grass because not only can it cause them to vomit, but it may be treated with a chemical you know nothing about.  Cats often will get grass caught in their throat and really be uncomfortable, gagging and even sneezing and vomiting. Dogs love the grass so much they keep eating until they vomit and then they may continue to vomit because it has upset their stomach!

"Catcher & Thumbalina"
Catcher and Thumbalina are from a feral litter of 4 from Pets Lifeline. They are Polydactyl cats (born with a congenital physical abnormality resulting in varying numbers of toes on their feet). According to their owners, "they have long limbs and extraordinary gymnastic abilities. They were very clumsy as kittens and they learned to compensate for their splay footed gates. They seem to be very adaptable behaviorally compared to other kittens we've had - perhaps because of this."
